Well I am not running vista but I can tell you that they have not really updated that feature. The genuine software check is only to scan the computer OS and operating system, not the programs on it, no matter who they are from. So you should be safe and set.

1. The "Genuine Microsoft" check for Vista (and XP) only cares about the validation of the OS. It does not care if anything else is pirated.
2. You can downgrade to an older OS, like XP or 2000 without a problem. However, you will more then likely run into a problem when it comes to get drivers. Most manufacturers only support the OS that the system came with. So it is very likely that you will be unable to get drivers for a new Laptop for XP.
And even worse, more and more new laptops are shipping with SATA hard drives. And without a SATA driver on a floppy, you will be unable to get past the opening parts of the installation. I have already run into this problem with at least 2 laptops, and 4 desktops. Your only solution then would be to install Media Center (which has SATA drivers built in), and hope that you can get Media Center drivers for everything else (NIC, Audio, Video, etc).

I got everything to install just fine....including my pirated copy of vista to begin with. (there's a time activation hack....for 2 months I've had the same 43200 minutes remaining to activate)
I can update vista through the windows updates which I couldn't do in xp so it's apparently even better in that regard. Got CS2, Nero 7, and Office 2007 all running bug free....can't update the office suite from microsoft though.....awwwelll :(
As far as xp goes....I started with that system and still have it. I put vista on a 2nd drive and I get the option of which to load during bootup. The boot.ini was configured automatically by vista and in the vista boot option under system properties you can select a default boot config.
100% confident this is true because I've been running vista for nearly 2 months.....did have trouble with an EA sports game but that was just a compatibilty issue and fixed with an update patch.
I'm also 100% confident there's some uninformed people answering this question...I definetly got Office enterprise edition to load without trouble....You can't update it and for the most part you can't download templates direct from inside the program....however, if you navigate to the office templates page in internet explorer you can still get the templates without it checking for qenuine copy.
ps...i just love how people like to stress ILLEGAL.....so far I haven't seen the FBI running through suburb streets and invading middle class homes to haul us all away.

Nero OR photoshop might work. But, Office 2003 definitely will not work. Downgrading Vista is also NOT an option unless you want to wipe the hard drive and start over (Vista can't be downgraded to XP). All Microsoft software now requires you to register and updates are only available after the Genuine Validation.

2) Yes, you can just format the hard drive and do a fresh install of XP. However, a pirated copy is ILEGAL.
1) Yes, if the program itself is compatible with vista. However, again this is ILEGAL!
