I have a deposit in my account that I didn't make, but my husband thinks someone could've put it in our account for his birthday. I called the bank to see where it was made, but they couldn't tell me.

Yes, if transaction numbers aren't correct, it could go to the incorrect account. Once the bank realizes the error, they will take the money from the wrong account and put it into the correct account.

1st, your husband lives in Candy Land. Why would someone secretly put money in his bank account? If I wanted to give someone money for their birthday, I would give a card w/ a wad of cash in the middle. Besides, how would they do this? They would need your bank routing number. I hope to God you don't easily give away such private information to people. Use a little logic. It was probably a mistake on the bank's part. Which is more likely, a mysterious friend secretly deposits cash into your account out of kindness; or, someone at the bank typed the wrong account number when completing a transaction and accidently put the money there??? I hope your next question isn't "Can I keep the money!"

Is it a lot of money? Someone said it took three years for the bank to take it back out....take all your money out, close the account and get a new bank...at least then all they can do it give it to a collection agency or put you on chex systems, but you'll already have a new bank account.

If a mistake was made it will be fixed even if it puts your balance at 0$. Pretend that money is not there for a few months and if nothing happens then use it. I would also ask your husband who might have made it and call them to ask.
