When joining two complete sentences (independent clauses) that are intimately linked, especially if they have a meaty word between them.
E.g. I fell out of the barrel; consequently, I am hurt.
Use a colon : when two ideas are equal to one another.
E.g. I fell out of the barrel: I am hurt. Not conventional, but grammatically correct.
