it's important so that you look natural and believable. for instance if you had to act out a scene brushing your teeth (an improv), and you just stood straight, it wouldnt really be believable. then imagine if you were really doing it how your body would be, bending forward to get a good view in the mirror, moving your head slightly left then right to get a better view of your teeth.

Body movement can describe a character for example say you are playing an angry person, an angry person would not be walking around all jumpy and buoyant they would be more stiff and stern. It defines to the audience the feeling inside of the character so they can the most realistic performance possible and also keeps it interesting. my advise to you is next time you are watching a movie watch the movement of one of the main characters and find the parallel of how that person is expressing how they feel

Actors need to be aware of their own bodies, and how they move normally and naturally. Then, they can impose adjustments on their natural movement patterns as part of the process of creating characters onstage.

Just like vocal/speech patterns, anything that an actor can do to modify what is normal/natural for him will help to create characters that, in some cases, will be nothing like him.

In my opinion, body language is a very big part of our emotions in everyday...so you'd have to portray how your feeling so your audience can connect with you. Another may be so you yourself can connect with the character you are playing. Being every aspect of that person or thing helps for a good performance.

It portrays your character better and is doing a lot more acting than your body. It gives the character emotion.
