When it comes to dining out I try not to do anything to upset the waiter/waitress or for that matter anyone dealing with my food. It would probably make someone unhappy eventually. To avoid this I would suggest for one of you to order the soft drink and another to order a water that way it will look less suspicious and no one gets upset!

The policy that my wife and I have is:
If we are eating at a restaurant like White Castle, Burger King, Penn Station, pretty much a fast food place we don't feel bad about sharing.
If we are eating at a nicer place like Olive Garden, Outback, Fridays, or any other sit-down place we don't share. We think that since you aren't getting the refill yourself you shouldn't make the server do more work when you only paid for one drink.

Depending on the suitation. If 2 persons are very close with each other, then it's very ok to share drinks. If they are both not very close, I suggest better not. It will spread germs and make all the people in the restauarant looking at the 2 persons feeling very cheapo.

I don't think it's wrong, as just cheap. If you're on a shoestring budge, maybe dining out isn't the best idea. If not, then why not buy two drinks. Maybe your wife would like to drink something different than you.

I don't think you have to worry about the server's getting as mad as the customers around you. They probably see what you are doing and get upset that they paid for their own drinks, and you didn't. I once saw a whole family at Pizza Hut that ordered one "all you can eat" salad bar, and then shared. It made me really mad. Sodas aren't REALLY that big of deal though.
Actually scratch that...if my husband and I drank the same thing, I would do it too. (only sodas, if wasn't posted that it wasn't allowed)

You are not alone brother. My wife and I do that sometimes. We are retired, and have to watch the pennies. I also order a Senior Citizen soda, which is cheaper. It's usually the smaller drink, but with free refills, you get as much as you want, and don't pay the price of a big drink. I also can refill and take it with me when I go.

Yes it is wrong. When you order a bottomless drink, it is for one person only. If you order a non-refillable drink, then it is ok to share.
