It has the consistency of egg whites; "gob of mucous" is a good description. It is simmilar to the cervical fluid that is produced around the time that you ovulate, only greater in quantity. The mucous plug sits in the opening of your cervix and helps keep germs, etc. out of your uterus. You may loose a little mucous after having sex or after a vaginal exam; don't worry, the mucous plug will re-form itself.

Generally, loosing your mucous plug is a sign that "something" is happening down there - i.e. a bit of dilation. The plug can come out all at once or in smaller pieces over time. It can also "liquify" and make you think that your water has broken. If the plug is clear, you may be days or even weeks away from giving birth; however, if the mucous is bloody it is called "bloody show" and is a fairly good indication that you are in labor.

It will be a glob of mucus sometimes with a little blood in it, but you can lose it and not know it when you use the restroom or shower.
