A power steering pump, would that cause my brakes to almost not work AT ALL?!?!

Ok, since no one seems to know what your problem is, let me tell you. You problem likely has absolutly nothing to do with your brakes, they are only a sympton of what is really wrong. From what you have said, I assume your Suburban is one of the old 6.2 Diesel Suburbans. Now, what you need to do is as follows.

1) Go out side and pop the hood, remove the Power Steering cap, and check the fluid, my bet is your just about dry.

2) When you find you have no Fluid, fill it back up, then start the truck.

3) Crawl underneath and look for the line of Power Steering Fluid. Follow it to its source, and TA DA!!! you have the source of your problem.

If it is a hose, pretty simple, just replace it with a hose (you can get at just about any parts store) and then fill your system back up. Your Brakes will return to normal and your Power Steering will go back to normal as well.

Quick explination: On your old Suburban, you Power Steering System and your Brakes go hand in hand, they BOTH run off the Hydraulic pressure created by the Power Steering System. To verify this is the kind of system you have, look at the firewall on the Driver's side of the vehicle. Between the firewall and the Master Sylinder, there will be another part, this is your Hydro Boost unit. Since those systems were pretty tough and durable, I'm gonna guess that the parts on there have been on there for quite a while which means they are all worn down a good bit. Once you fix this problem, be wary of that Hydro Boost Unit, the renewed pressure they system will run with when you fix it may kill a seal in it. Pretty simple to replace, just keep an eye on it. I hope this helps, Good Luck

I know it might sound crazy but LARMARINE's answer is probably correct. They still make these p.s. assisted power brake systems. I hate them. Your symptoms suggest that you don't have vacuum assisted power brakes. The assist comes by the steering pump. With a failure in the steering system you will likewise have a "failure" in your brake system, but only in so far as the power assist will not work. The brakes will still function but with great effort.

I suggest you remove the carcase of the dead cow from under the wheel arch before the traffic police call.
