No. being poor has nothing to do with not being able to read.
We went to school and learned all we could but we were still poor.
Being poor meant we didn't have the money to spend on what ever we wanted to. I made the honor roll all through school.

I am having a problem trying to understand why you would even ask such a thing.

That is such an ignorant question. No, you idiot, they aren't. Some people are born into poverty, some are born into poor areas, some people have a bad run of events and loose what they had, and it just goes on. I grew up poor white trash because my mom worked non stop to raise me and my sister alone in a poor rural area. She wasn't ignorant or illiterate, she actually worked a decent paying job but being a single mother kinda takes care of the problem of extra money. You obviously have no idea what it's like to not have money, so don't even try to understand. You can't read it in a book or hear it second hand, you've been there or you haven't, end of story.

If you think all poor people are illiterate then the world would be without some truly great minds that have done amazing things. First example that comes to mind is a poor black janitor with only one year of college education. He worked hard and achieved more than the world wanted to allow him in the height of segregation. He was Vivian Thomas, and he helped develop the surgery for blue baby syndrome. He had to direct the operating surgeon through the entire prodecure. He did great things and was later honored by John's Hopkins with an honorary doctorate. If you are clueless about this man, check him out, or find the movie "Something the Lord Made." Mos Def did a great job playing Vivian Thomas.

No, they're illiterate (but only to some extent) because they're poor.
