I will be burying 8 - 14 ga wires for irrigation use. The most constructable option is to use 14ga THHN wire and direct bury it. I know that THHN is fine for placement in conduit underground, since many places use it for traffic signals. I need to know if using this for direct bury is ok? This is in Arizona, so even though it is buried it will get pretty toasty, but this is a low voltage usage (24v).

No, No, No. If you are using single conductors use THEN. The W stands for water resistant. It might be more economical to use cable, instead of single conductors.

Since it is a low voltage circuit, it would be safe to bury the cables.

I wouldn't direct bury it because pvc conduit is not that expensive. Running the wire in conduit would prevent a multitude of problems in the future.

I take it that these wires are controling selenoids or water valves for your sprinklers? If so then you should have no problems! From a fellow "zoni" Jerald from Yuma
