The colours is the hard part. I can readily tell you who came into the Huge European War, and in what order, but soldiers did not normally wear flags on their arms.

Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy fought the Serbs, the Russians, the French, and the English.
The Italians changed sides halfway through the war. It was a trench war and it was stalled at a sort of draw when the US came in on the side of the French and the English and the balance shifted in their favor.
The colors were the color of the flags that were used at the time.
England, France, Russia and the US: red white and blue.
Italy: red, white and green
Austria-Hungary: red and white
Germany: red, yellow and black
Serbia: red white and blue, I think.
It was not a war about colors. Perhaps you are confusing the fights between Crips (blue) and the Bloods (red).
It was more about kings and emperors, who were almost as silly as the Crips and the Bloods.
It began in August of 1914 (because a Serb assassinated Crown Prinz Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary) and ended with a truce on November 11th, 1918.
It was shorter than the current war in Iraq, but lots more people died, because there were more people involved and they were not at all good at healing wounds.
Some say it was started for the same reason however: stupidity.
After the war there were fewer royal families, which was basically a good thing.
