I suppose some of the previous answers will do the job for you, but there's a much quicker and easier way to do a good defrag without the hangups....just shut your pc off, and when you turn it on again, keep tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. The pc will boot into what's known as "Safe Mode" without loading a lot of other programs into memory. Then run your defrag. Once done, just exit from Safe Mode and reboot. That's about all there is to it. Hope this helps.

Stop your defragmentation process, and close all of the programs that are running on your computer. ANY programs that are running WILL access the hard drive, and when things on the hard drive are accessed, files get moved, making your defragmentation process fail. Check the Windows taskbar at the bottom for any programs that are running (including the lower right corner).
When you've closed all your programs, restart your defrag process and wait.
A really fragmented hard drive may take days for the program to sort through all of it.

there's a program running. Push ctrl + alt + delete and close out everything except explorer and defragment.

you have a really old unit and didn't defrag it enough. Restert the machine, run Ccleaner and AdAware, then dick cleanup, THEN defrag the drive.

This happened to me once and i never could get it to defrag.Maybe you need to get rid of alot of programs you don,t need to have.I have deleted many games and favorites till i get some space cleared up.I would also try disc cleanup.Have you tried system restore.
