Well all of Steinbeck's novels are really "novelettes" so you can really pick any of them up and read them in a day or two. And since you're asking this question in higher education I'm guessing you need something that spans about three of his books if not more. So here is my advice/thesis for you to explore.

I would say that Steinbeck draws from the sorrows of his own life and those around him as inspiration. You can find this illustrated in all of his novels since he wrote in the time of the great dust bowl where many people migrated in search of a better life from the heartland in to the Central valley of California where Steinbeck lived. That's where I would start. Enjoy writing!

I thought "Travels with Charley" reveals the most about him, and it's a short, easy read.
