The two characters Shug and Celie have different ideas and perceptions about God. Shug thinks that the world is beautiful and life is joyous. She believes that that is what God wanted all of his children to be – to celebrate life. As such, Shug thinks that not being happy nor appreciating beauty are in themselves a sin. In the belief that one should always looks for beauty, Shug goes on to say that “it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it.” This phrase is probably the reason for the title of the book, although in the entire book, colors have been used to signify things. In this case, the color purple is associated with royalty and a purple dress is what Celie wants.
