Fleer produced its first baseball cards sold with cookies back in 1963. Although it lasted only 1 year due to legal action by Topps, Fleer was back in the baseball card business by 1981. A 1980 court ruling states that Topps’ exclusive rights apply only to baseball cards sold with gum, thus opening the door for competitors like Fleer and Donruss. That's why you have set like 2003 Fleer Focus Jersey Edition. In 2005, Fleer stunned the baseball card world by declaring bankruptcy. Its assets were later purchased by Upper Deck, which decided to manufacture and market products under the Fleer brand names. That's why you have the 2006 Fleer Greats of the Game cards. As for Donruss, MLB declines to renew Donruss’ license citing a glut in the marketplace and the desire to regain some control over the baseball card industry, leaving Topps and Upper Deck as the only producers.
