I sucked my thumb untill I was in the 5th grade my parents tried EVERYTHING from bribing me with what ever I wanted at that time to putting this really nasty tasting nail stuff on my thumbs that would make it so I wouldn't want to suck them. I was of course old enough to go and wash it off before it set but she is not yet that old so maybe try that I can't remember though what it is called but it is used to help people stop bitting their finger nails. It took me losing a retainer that had prongs on the roof that came down and poked my thumb to get me to stop. (My parents had told me how much it was and I knew we didn't have a lot of money so when I threw it away accidently I felt horrible and stopped they then paid for me to have my teeth fixed because sucking my thumb ruined my teeth). Good luck and maybe as her doctor for ideas on how to help her with this matter.

There is a type of nail polish you can buy specifically to stop thumb sucking. It is safe and leaves a foul taste in the child's mouth when they suck their thumbs or any other fingers. Catch your child asleep and then put the polish on. If you do it when she is awake, you may have a fight on your hands. I don't know what it is called, but if you do an internet search, you can find it.

Why do you want to stop her? My three and seven year olds still suck their thumbs. I think it's ideal; there's no pacifier to lose; they can't play with their thumb in their mouth like you can with a paci, so they don't suck NEARLY as much as with a pacifier, and it hasn't harmed their teeth--the dentist said (a children's specialist, I should add), that she couldn't even tell by looking at my seven year old's teeth that she is a thumb sucker. Leave your poor baby alone!

Sucking her thumb is a comfort thing.

Ways to break it...get her something else she can be comforted by..a blanket, special stuffed animal.

Have her wear a pair of gloves to bed

Put a bandaid on her thumb (or a few)

there is yucky stuff you can put on it (at natural store).

she will break herself of the habit when she gets to school age..or she is ready to....I wouldn't worry about it..it is better then a pacifier.!

i would ask your doctor if putting something like lemon juice on her thumb would be safe. i have heard of this method before, but just to be on the safe side. don't listen to those others that they'll stop when their ready.....my brother is almost 31 yrs old and my husbands aunt is in her fifties and both of them still suck their thumb, so the earlier you get a hold on it the better

15 months old isn't too old to be sucking her thumb. Most kids don't stop until later in life (like 2 or 3).
However, if you are concerned about it, your doctor can give you the best recommendation to get her to stop (or if she even really needs to stop).

Whenever you catch her sucking it, pull her thumb out of her mouth and give her a chewy toy.
