I know it's bad but I went to my sister's house overnight and forgot to blow out a candle and it burned for about 24 hours. It was on a high bookcase and I noticed a very large light soot patch on the ceiling afterwards. I made the mistake of using liquid to try and clean it and all it did was spread it around. It's now a huge smeared soot patch. Is there any way to clean it now? Any thing that's not liquid?

A Mr. Clean magic eraser and cleanser. The back of a sponge works too. You know those sponges that have scouring pads on the back. They'll do, if you haven't got a magic eraser. Just don't rub too hard, 'cuz most of the time the scouring pad is green, so don't want to rub the colour onto your ceiling, particularly if your ceiling is white. If you're ceiling isn't white, don't get the cleaser with bleach in it.

Once the stain is removed, wipe the excess cleanser off with a wet j-cloth and some multi-purpose cleaner. Should work. I've done exactly what you describe.

Have you tried Dawn dish washing liquid? It cuts through all kinds of grease. It probably has some candle wax in it because it was so close to the ceiling. You can use things like Goo Be Gone or Acetate, but you will probably have to paint the spot again after cleaning. Good Luck!

You were on the right track with the Mr Clean eraser but the trick I found is take a clean dry rag and wipe behind the eraser. My husband and I love candles and had the same problem, the erasers work fantastically you just have to wipe it with a clean cloth, continue to rub with the eraser until soot is gone.
