Offer to help pay for it if you can...... maybe you could just settle for some upgrades and compromise. I have an extra computer that I've had for about seven years. I threw some more ram in it, a video card, and bought an external hard drive for it. That fixed it up enough to make me happy for a few more years. If you needed, you could up the processor too. Just make sure you don't spend more updating than the computer is worth. Tiger Direct has pretty good prices.

You can speed that computer up with good maintenance. It probably has a virus and the operating system needs reloaded. Get a free os at www.kubuntu.org and get rid of that old virus infected Windows Operating system.

download a virus. ha. No just tell them how all the newer programs you need for school, etc. require higher system requirements to run and you need a computer that can run more recent Operating systems because they have more security features that protect you for having your personal information stolen.

Show them how poorly you spell. Then parade in front of them an endless stream of educational software and explain (lie) to them that only a newer computer can handle such applications.
If that doesn't work, well I've always been a fan of fire myself...

Basically install any version of software created within the last year or so and let them see how it performs...especially hardware intensive games.
