Hunley is correct, but what no one has told you is that it was pedal-driven and had no source of oxygen. The entire crew had been wiped out on a trial run, and so were these brave men who succeeded.
Perhaps I'm a bit claustrophobic, but I can't think of much worse than being in a submarine, whether German or US, under depth charge attack. But this was worse.

The Hunley.. It is in Charleston South Carolina being preserved.
Side Note. It sunk and killed it's entire crew on 3 different times even killing is creator.
