use the process of elimination.
you just add them together.

x-y=23.7
x+y=61.1
_________
2x+0y=84.8

x=42.4

then you plug in x and get y (doesn't matter which equation)
42.4+y=61.1

subtract x, and get y

y=18.7

hope that helped!

x-y = 23.7
x+y = 61.1

x-y+x+y = 23.7 + 61.1
(-y+y) cancels each other out, so you are left with 2x on the left side
23.7+61.1 = 84.8 on the right side
2x = 84.8
divide by 2 to get
x = 42.4

If x+y = 61.1 and x = 42.4, then y = 61.1 - 42.4, or 18.7

You can then re-do the caluclations from step 1 to ensure your answer is correct

x = 23.7 + y

Substitute the above in x + y = 61.1

(23.7 + y) + y = 61.1

23.7 +2y = 61.1

2y = 37.4

y = 18.7

Now, put y in the equation

x - 18.7 = 23.7

x = 42.4

Transpose x=23.7 + y
Substitute for x: 23.7 + y +y = 61.1
Or: 23.7 +2y= 61.1
Then 2y= 61.1-23.7
y=(61.1-23.7)/2
Or: 37.4/2 = 18.7=y

rearrage x-y=23.7 to x=23.7 +y
Substitute 18.7 for y
then x=23.7 +18.7 =42.4

x=42.4
y=18.7

x-y=23.7
x=y+23.7 (move y over)
(y+23.7)+y=61.1 (substitute for x)
2y=37.4 (subtract 23.7, combine like terms)

y=18.7

x-(18.7)=23.7 (substitue value for y)

x=42.4
