Use post hole diggers and a digging bar! That is a steel bar with a sharp square point end! The bar weighs about 25 lbs and is designed to cut through roots rocks and hard ground! A power auger will not work as roots will make it bind! Just make sure there are no underground utilities that you may damage!

Keep your spade sharpened so you can cut through them.
Rent a large gas powered auger. Make sure you check for under ground electric and gas lines first. If there are any, only hand dig near them.
We rented one to plant 40+, four foot high arborvitae in a hedge row. It made a big job in hard compact soil only take a few hours. It takes two strong people to handle the auger.

Either use clippers, an axe or saw to remove if you are doing by hand or a post hole digger (with auger) should cut right through them.

If you have a chain saw with a blade that's on it's way out or a good pair of lopping shears. good luck be careful with those gas augers they'll knock you on your butt and I guarantee you'll know you used one the following morning
