Believe it or not, Napoleon Dynamite is supposed to take place in present day. It seems like it took place in the '80s because it's in Idaho (not that I have anything against Idaho) and it adds to how funny the movie is.

I wondered the same thing, but the movie is very modern. It takes place in present times, but because they're in Idaho, you have a bit of backwards, redneck humor. They aren't really in touch with the times out there, and they're really just a bunch of "white trash" (putting it crude) trying to make it
ACTUALLY, reminds me of a friend I went to school with. Had four broken cars on her lawn, shopped in the school lost and found, and had a chicken in her bedroom..

Present day. I thought it was 80's but Uncle Rico wants to go back to 82' so it can't be in those times. But that's what makes it funny, haha.

Present day, believe it or not! LOL
They are so backasswards, but I guess they made it that way to make it even funnier. It is like time stopped in the 80s!
Love that movie!

I think it it supposed to be contemporary (2004 ish) but is supposed to kind of focus on lack of rural culture to have met with contemporary culture at the same time.

i think it`s a mix of right now and the 70s-80s. i don`t quite remember. because they have old things yet they have some new things that only existed in present time. hope that helps.
