The bones are not fully developed yet with lots of cartilage between them. They need to be flexible to fit through the small opening of the cervix. As they move through the cervix and the birth canal, they need to be able to be squeezed smaller. It is a tight fit.

Babies are flexible because their bones haven't yet harden. Bones aren't fully developed until they are older although sorry I can't remember around what age that happens.

They have a lot more bones than an adult or even a young child. As they grow, the bones fuse or grow together.
