Those succesful applicants do have to pay for the mortgage of their house unless a company or some financial firm offers to pay off the mortgage. (hence some appearances by companies on the show who offer the pay out). They also don't pay for any appliances inside the house unless over a certain value (can't remember the total value) I had emailed ABC about this awhile ago for a article I was writing in our magazine. Their outlines may have changed by now but this was the original! Hope this helps!

I would think it's a total gift because most of the people that they build those houses for are not in a situation where they can afford better. Just look at the houses that they were living in. If they could really afford to pay for a new house why would they be living in sub-standard conditions?

I have read that those who receive brand new houses have to commit to live in that house for 10 years. There is no mortgage because the corporate sponsors have contributed the entire costs for demolition and reconstruction. I believe that the houses are titled to the owner and Disney, Co. - after 10 years, Disney, Co. quit-claims itself from the deed.
The 10 year requirement is to discourage someone from selling a new house and pocketing the profits. If someone wants to leave the house, they have to quit-claim themselves from the deed. All of this is crystal clear when a person participates in the program.

The house is free, but they have to pay property taxes on the new house. These taxes can be huge depending on the new house and what they had before. Several families have not been able to afford the taxes.

I think I read somewhere that they have to pay taxes on the value of the house -- and some people can't afford to do that, so they lose it.

i would guess they would be responsibly for the property taxes and such and after seeing some of the folks and hearing their stories and the size of the houses they get built for them i can not see how they can afford the taxes and general upkeep, even utilities for a huge house
