Always feed him in the same corner of the tank.. and when he gets use to that slowly work into it.. my goldfish recognize me when I come to the tank and all come up to the same corner when I open the lid.. because i always feed them from there ;)

Start by feeding them in the same place at the same time. The most aggressive fish will be your best bet. Wash your hands and rinse them well. While feeding them stick your hand in. Don't chase them and if they flee frightened back off. Slow and gentle try to lightly touch them. When you do water changes do the same. Never be aggressive. Then soon they will get comfortable with your hands and won't be afraid. Hold a piece of food out for them to take. Most GF will learn who takes care of them and will not run or be bothered at all by the touching. But however there will be some who are just skiddish and may never eat from your hand. Don't ever try to force them, frightening fish is a cause of stress and can eventually cause them to catch disease. Chasing can lead to exhaustion or heart attack, chased fish can easily suddenly die. You know how the fish act in panic mode. Do not attempt any of this if they are behaving that way. If you don't know they dart away very quickly and are 'super alert', darting away at the least little thing. Sometimes when you first bring them home they will respond that way. Too long in that state of mind is a stressor, its best to leave the room and keep quietness around the tank until they settle down. Goldfish are usually very inquistitive and friendly and very easy to train to eat from your hand. They love to eat, it shouldn't take too long. I've had my fish for 3 years now and none of them mind being touched or hand fed, they know I won't hurt them. They do have a memory longer than 3 seconds and are even capable of learning tricks. Somewhere on the internet you can find a kit that has little hoops and soccer ball and net. It comes with an instruction book on how to teach them to swim through the hoop or put the little soccer ball into the net. I think its possible knowing the behavior of these little guys. Good luck, and post on here somewhere how you're doing.

You need to associate a particular action with food. Feed always from a particular corner of the tank. Tap lightly on the glass first before giving food. Wave your finger in a direction they're moving before feeding. Associate a finger or hand movement and feeding with something they do naturally and it becomes a trick. They turn a certain direction, you associate your finger or hand moving in the same direction, then you associate food with the two movements. It takes patience and time to teach tricks. Goldfish can get overfed very quickly. Don't overfeed in an effort to force them to learn the trick sooner. Only do these associative behaviors during the regular feeding time.

My angelfish come to my hand to eat. It's really cool. Try taking the largest flake you can find(if you use flake food) and dip it in the water. It will take a while so be patient, it can take anywhere from a day or two to a week to train them. In the end they will eventually realize their food is there and willl come to you. Good Luck!
