I have a somewhat conventional keyboard with the round circular type plugin that goes in the back of my computer in the keyboard slot. Well I bought a new laptop that does not have this plug in is there some sort of cable converter that can switch it to a usb? if so what are they called?

Trick question.

A laptop already has a keyboard.

Anyway why would you want to put an old worn out KB on a nice shiny new laptop? The cable will cost $6 and new USB kb only costs $9

Yes, the PS/2 to USB converter will work, for about $6-8. Or, you can buy a cheap USB keyboard for $12-16. Your choice.

Also, if you are planning to dock the laptop, it may have a docking station you can buy, with keyboard and mouse connectors.

I used this USB to PS/2 converter. It worked perfectly.
Be careful there are a lot of cheap ones that do not work correctly.
