It's esp wonderful that you are doing this at your age! Is there a specific animal or breed that has special meaning to you? If there is, it might be nice to donate to an organization that rescues/helps that specific animal/breed. I noticed your profile says you have a chihauha, here's a chihauha rescue site: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/
Here's the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruielty to Animals) site: http://www.spca.com/
Note that SPCA is different from animal shelters, shelters are usually government operated.
Recently I've been looking into various animal rescue organizations myself. One that recently helped me out is this one: http://www.englishtoyspanielrescue.org/
I'm not sure if they all work this way, but what this one does is rescues dogs from puppy mills by buying them at dog auctions, then they take good care of them until they can find good homes to place them in ... all of which takes money. I'm planning on donating $20 which I figure will buy at least one bag of dog food.
Here's another one for birds that seems really neat, and they also try to educate people on the plight of domistic birds (parrots, etc): http://mickaboo.org/adoption/index.html (be sure to click on the link: how you can help
My daughter loves manatees, and when she was young (started at 7 years old) she always donated part of her birthday money to the save the manatee foundation ... they have an "adopt a manatee" club, it's also a very worthy cause: http://www.savethemanatee.org/
We have a neat local organization called H.A.R.T. which is dedicated to rescuing cats: http://www.slohart.org/lostfoundform.htm
There are also rescue organizations that help horses (both wild & domestic) ... if you are interested, I can find a website for you.
Can you tell that I tend to prefer the privately/independently run rescue organizations ? ;-)
Oh yeah, BTW, not all no kill shelters place all animals, unfortunately some of the animals have to live their entire lives out in small cages at the shelter if they don't get adopted ... or they will ship the animal to another shelter that does euthanize them :-( I've done a lot of volunteer work at shelters (and have adopted quite a few of our pets including mice, guinea pigs, dogs & cats).
Edit: Last, be sure to find an organization where the largest % of your donation goes to directly help the animals ... often a lot of donation & fundraising $ goes to "administration" unless you specify or ask.

I am so happy people acully WANT to donate to animal shelters. Most people are like,"Yea, whatever I just hunt and eat them."
IF your town or city doesn't already have a shelter then ask the community mayor or whatever if you could start one. That's where that $$ could go. I would be happy if you could do that and if not, maybe go to the pound and rescue a few animal and see if you could take care of them or give them to family members.

The Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood, FL is an awesome no kill shelter. After the hurricanes of 2004 they were flooded with storm victims. They called them Charley's Angels, after the first big storm of the season. They never turned an animal away.

Try Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Santuary in Montana or Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah - they both take in animals from all over the US - and not just cats and dogs. Both have websites. Check them out.

It is perpectly fine to donate to an animal shelter, but can you think out side the box and donate to a real cause such as donating some money to any african non profit organizations or asians and middle eastern countries, these non profit organization will help human beings just like you and me , i d rather help a human right now then an animal.
