i have a hp DVD writer 740B and it recognizes dvd and plays them, but it wont recognize blank cds when i try to record audio. i have tried updating the firmware. i used an air can to spray out dust bunnies but no use. pleae help me on this issue. how much do external CD buners, basic ones?

possibly a bad batch of blanks...

A high quality external USB DVD-RW drive is about $100. I got a Lightscribe for that.

You said you've updated the firmware, but have you reinstalled the correct driver for the drive? That often helps.
If you are going to purchase a new external burner, you might check with newegg.com for one. Below is the link on newegg.com with the external burners listed. Hope this helps.
