Can I buy stocks from somewhere and have it in my Vanguard portfolio? Will, I need a whole new porfolio or does Vanguard know when I buy a stock? Or do I need only to buy off Vanguard?

go to scotttrade.com its a lot better than vandgaurd, low rates and commision, and fees

Vanguard is not your boss, You are the customer, so you are king.
You can have investment accounts in many firms and each would be happy with your business even though they would rather be your sole supplier.
So go ahead,by mutual funds, one place, stocks another, and get two different opinions on the markets from these different sources.
