I am writing this question with concearn for my nephew. I recently seen my sister in law holding my nephew. I was at my brother and sister in laws house for approximately 3 hours. During that time I seen my sister in law holding my two month nephew walking around the house holding him with one arm. His head flopped back three times. She did not support his head and his head really flung back. I thought you have to support newborns heads? I have no children and I am not a expert. I feel real guilty not saying something to my sister in law. Also when I seen my nephew I was really struck back that he seemed like a 1 week year old baby verse 10 week old baby. He slept like a newborn would, and had little expression when he was awake. My brother says he sleeps all the time. I have another niece and nephew and I do not remember them being like that at that age. Could this be caused by not supporting his head? Or is this normal? Please help!!!

you should support a baby's head until they'rea a year old. you support it so he muscles in the neck can develop normal and the baby wouldn't have problems.

Baby Neck Support

Yes its extremely important to support a newborns neck. their muscles are not formed properly and they need that support so they are not flopping around. That could cause some damage not only to the neck but the brain also. Plus not to mention the soft spots that dont close up till later. Thats why they make neck rests for newborns, if it wasn't important they wouldn't make them. I would let her know that supporting a baby neck and head during at least the first 6 months is crucial to his overall developement and cold ause some serious brain and neck problems.

You really should say something to your sister-in-law. Not supporting a babys neck/head could cause serious problems. A babys head should be supported until they can fully support it on their own. If they have held it once or twice by themselves, thats not enough. They have to be able to hold it up ALL the time by themselves before you stop supporting their head.

It's dangerous because it can cause neck damage. At that young age they can't support their heads so as you said they flop around.

Defects happen to us humans, Defects are spoken of in the Bible. No the Doctors nor the Mother did not make a wrong decision. Edit: I too have compassion for the head. But it was only the head, it had no other organs like the heart or lungs to help support it. It is sad(very sad) but sometimes bad things happen in life that we have no answers as to why or how this happend

sadly i knew a girl whose baby got whiplash from his head snapping back when he was 3 months old......and i know that babys can get brain damage if their head is jerked around too much ( aka shaken baby syndrome).....you should always always support their head and neck even after they are holding it up on their own..until they are at least siting. most babies by your nephews age can lift their own heads up.......but their heads are very large for their bodies so they cant keep it up, and when the neck gets tired the head just flops whichever way it wants to basically...as far as the sleeping goes.....some babies just sleep alot lol
