CE stands for "Common Era." It is a relatively new term that is experiencing increased usage and is expected to eventually replace AD. The latter is an abbreviation for "Anno Domini" in Latin or "the year of the Lord" in English. The latter refers to the approximate birth year of Yeshua of Nazareth (a.k.a. Jesus Christ). CE and AD have the same and value. 2004 CE = 2004 AD.
BCE stands for "Before the common era." It is expected to eventually replace BC, which means "Before Christ," or "Before the Messiah." BC and BCE are also identical in value. Most theologians and religious historians believe that the approximate birth date of Yeshua of Nazareth (Jesus) was in the fall, sometime between 7 and 4 BCE, although we have seen estimates as late as 4 CE and as early as the second century BCE.
I saw the B.C.E. once while looking up something and couldn't figure it out at all... hope this helps you out!

BC means "Before Christ" and AD means "Anno Domini" or "in the year of the Lord." Some historians are now using the term Common Era (CE) and Before Common Era (BCE) in place of AD and BC to avoid the use of religious terms.
I don't think there is a particularly reliable birthdate for Jesus. The range appears to be from about 8 BC to 6 AD.

When your history book says that Jesus Christ was born around 3 BC it is just stating that they are not sure when He was born, because no one knows the exact date. Jesus didn't have a birth certificate. Most historians judge Jesus' age from what we are told in the Bible. Remember Mary and Joseph had to fled with baby Jesus to Egypt for 3 years. So the time-line begins at the time when Jesus came back to Israel. This is not typical but it is one theory that is circulating through some text books.
BC does mean before Christ, and AD is in the year of our Lord.
AD refers to the years after the Lord's birth.

BC does mean before Christ but you're right that that doesn't make perfect sense. There is a lot of controversy over what year Jesus was actually born in. Most historical sources tend to agree that Jesus was born in 6 BC, but since the precise year of his birth is unknown, a year was somewhat arbitrarily chosen to be 1 AD.
