one of the major reasons for the revolutionary war the the question of venturing westwards. The British government wanted the colonist to stay east of the Appalachian mountains for their protection and the government didn't have the resource to protect them..well for the time being that is.
here are some thoughts on things Britain could have done to prevent the American revolution.
1. not tax them at all. (very unheard of)
2. let them expand westward (they are on their own)
3. not press Britain ambitions (rivalry with France)
4. take care of secret meetings which seeks to overthrown the crown authority (by taking care i mean, weeding out people with undesired thoughts)
5. placing a Central figure who appeals to the farmers of colonies and at the same time unquestionably loyalty to Britain.
6. use of psychology (something along the mindset of the colonies would not survive without Britain)

There is probably little if anything that England could have done to prevent the American Revolution.....The colonies were offered representation in the lower house of parliment based on their "english" population (not including germans, etc.) but to the man it was refused. The seeds of self-rule were too strong for them to be overcome on all areas from religion to commerce

Stopped using its colonies as an ATM by over taxing them to fund their war against France. If the king listened to his citizens and not have brushed them aside the colonists would not have been forced to take action. It was a culmination of bad decisions that transpired but the way King George was going the American Revolution was inevitable.

Read the Declaration of Independence. In particular, read the alleged wrongdoings of "the present King of Great Britain." Then imagine that the government of the prime minister Lord North should not have done the bad things that he did. Next imagine that he should have done the good things that he did not do. You'll have things pretty well set.
