Here are a list of things to check when your car starts burning too much fuel:
1. Air filter (up to 10% fuel economy benefit)
2. Oil filter
3. Use the manufacturers recommended motor oil. You can improve your gas mileage (1-2% fuel economy benefit)
4. Tire pressure (up to 3%)
5. Your driving (best mileage comes from at around 55mph and the gas pedal at about 1/3 of the way depressed)
6. Spark plugs -check these to see the condition of your engine. A damaged tip can mean your engine is detonating (the cause of faulty fuel management or cheap gas)
I'd also recommend a tune-up and/or filter service.
I wouldn't recommend trading-in your car -- especially if you already own it. Check the Kelly Blue Book value.

your car has electronic fuel injection system that is run by a computer. The computer has many sensors to determine the gas and air mixture for your engine to get as much power as it is designed to give out. Sometimes, the sensors such as the O2 sensor which detects the air quality goes out or does not function properly and the fuel injection system compensates by burning more gas. It can greatly reduce your gas mileage when one of these electronic fuel injection sensors go bad.
Another problem may be your electronic Ignition. there is a coil that amplifies your electrical spark to your spark plug. If the spark is weak, it may burn more gasoline or make your engine labor more because the proper combustion is not possible with a weak spark. start by changing your spark plugs and your wires and see if you notice the difference.
Is there a fuel leak? Do you smell gasoline? You have to do a visual inspection of the fuel lines to determine if there is a fuel leak.
Most of the above problems can be fixed or recognized when you do a complete tune up for your car.
Honda's are very well made cars and there is something definitely wrong if you are not getting the gas mileage you got when the car was new.

No one has suggested the Mass Airflow sensor. When that goes out (or even if the cable just comes lose), you will burn gas like crazy! Also, you may have a bit of black smoke, or you may not. But I would at least make sure all your connections are tight.

Trade it in... Although Honda's are good and economical I don't keep anything that has more then 80k miles. I don't intentionally buy headaches not worth it to me.
