Madison is considered the father of the Constitution. He authored the document. He was also one of the primary authors (the other was Hamilton) of the Federalist Papers. These papers were instrumental in convincing states to adopt the Constitution. He paper on factions is considered a classic in political philosophy.

Madion also authored the Virginia Resolution which argued states could nullify certain federal laws. This served as a southern argument for independence prior to the civil war.
