Gay men who originally got their ears pierced did so to signify a sexual preference, with a right ear piercing meaning a submissive sexual role and a left ear piercing meaning a dominant sexual role.
These meanings changed over time with the right ear piercing supposedly signifying being gay and a left ear piercing signifying straight.
Today, there is no real significance attached to which ear a person prefers to have pierced.

That was an 80s and 70s thing. It's not really relevent now. It's in that same catagory as wearing your keys on the left side of your hips, which used to mean you were into bondage. Now soccer moms do it and no one thinks twice. In short, there is no 'gay ear' these days.

times change, this doesn't matter any more. lots of straight guys pierce their ears, left, right or both.

if you are a guy and only one ear is pierced it would be the right ear... it symbolizes you are queer...

I always tried this saying when younger.
"Left is right and right is wrong."
