Well, it is an extremely rare metal, and it has several very special properties:
it is soft and malleable - you can pound it into sheets that are a few microns thick and into any number of thicker shapes, that are often used for jewelry;
It combines with other metals to form other useful alloys, like 14 carat gold and related alloys;
It has a beautiful luster, that is, well, golden, that has captivated humans for millenia;
Au is almost completely inert - it is always found in nature in elemental forms - not in salts or other compounds. It is unique from other metallic materials - it is good for many things, like electrical connectors, teeth fillings, military grade components, etc....;
It is dense, and substantial.
If you can find another element like this, let me know.

In 1972 Richard Nixon signed into law a "currency". Our dollar was no longer part of the "Gold Standard", The english pound sterling is..
We had a few people that had all of the money, and more importantly, it was easier for a few bad apples to rock our economy.
So, gold is the good old standby. It is not corrosive, and does not react with hardly any other elements (it stores well)
Gold lasts longer than paved roads, and limestone buildings.
You see stonehenge? see how the rocks are rounded? they all used to be straight and carved as rulers, They found gold near the sight that is in the exact same condition as it was nearly 6,000 years ago, with a microscope you can see the tool marks that were used to make it.
So, gold is a history book, and we like it. We like it like grain, a nice bed, a solid house, and good handy-work.
Do not seek it desperately, or like all else that is material you will become slave to it, because yes it does have a half-life.

gold is worth a lot of money because it is a valuable metal also it takes a lot of time to find( paning) and gold is good for a couple of things: showing off your jewelery ( don't reccomend you gonna probally get robbed) it's also good to have for emergency, if you run out of money you can sell gold and survive.
