This is true what's happening to my fish and those that think it's funny and think it's not real.. you might as well not answer any fish questions then cause obviously you have no clue about fish.

Your fish have fin rot. They have either had their fins damaged by another fish or by jagged objects in the tank or rough handling by you or from a bacterial infection and this has now turned into a secondary infection. The black could either be an ammonia burn from poor water quality, which can also cause the fin rot, or it could be something called Melanophore Migration, which is a paling of the skin followed by black patches, which is actually signs of the fish healing; kind of like a scab. But, we can't assume that the fish is healing and need to treat for the fin rot. Treat with Maracyn or Maracyn-2 according to directions. Fins can grow back as long as the disease doesn't progress to the body part of the fin. Fish can easily survive fin rot with proper treatment. Treatment can take a long time, so patience and diligence are required. Don't give up if it still doesn't look any better after only a couple of weeks. Also, you need to get a master test kit to check your water quality in the event your fish has gotten this disease from poor water quality. Your readings should be: Ammonia, 0 ppm; nitrites, 0 ppm; and nitrates, 40 ppm or less. If they are not, you need to do some 25% water changes about every other day, add some Amquel and keep testing. Don't ever clean the tank squeaky clean. You could also have poor water quality from overstocking. Good luck!

Fin rot is the most likely answer. My suggestion is to go to your nearest Petsmart (or store) and buy some maracyn-two. It treats dropsy, septicemia, popeye, fin and tail rot. Also, even though you may have a freshwater fish, you can buy Aquarium Salt to put in the water. Don't add too much, make sure you read the instructions on the back - but this salt can help reduce the stress of the fish that could be lowering it's immune system (just like humans) not to mention it also helps enhance the treatment for the disease that is being given.
Aquarium Salt says right on the box: "For Freshwater Fish"
"API AQUARIUM SALT PROVIDES ESSENTIAL ELECTROLYTES FRESHWATER FISH NEED TO REACH PEAK COLORATION AND VITALITY."

Seems like your fish have a disease called "fin and tail rot" you will need to go to your local pet shop and request the apppropriate medication and hope for the best.

The black is a sign of healing. Watch and wait. Hydrogen peroxide dabbed on the fins will help if it persists.

Dude! Listen to Venice girl, she is right on the money. I am currently treating with Fungus Eliminator. You usually get this with feeder fish. I know that is how I got it. Good Luck! I have already lost 2 fancy guppies.

it might be because other fish are nibbling at them as for the black stuff im guessing its external parasites. You can buy products for external parasites and i know of a product called melafix for open wounds and damaged fins
