If I remember correctly, the wrestlers must put down a deposit on the belt, which includes the actual cost of the belt plus extra. So in other words, a belt like Big Gold (the Smackdown World Championship belt) is valued at around $2,900, so Batista probably put down a deposit for $3,500 on the belt. In a sense the champion owns the belt. When he loses and returns the belt, the WWE gives him his deposit back. I don't remember if that's the way it still works, the system may have been revised following the incidents in the late 80s and early 90s when champions took their belts to other companies.
As far as incidents going, there have been several.
Ric Flair took the WCW/NWA world championship to the WWE in the late 80s, most likely the reason why the above method of deposits is not still being used.
In '95, Alundra Blayze took the WWE Women's Championship to WCW and tossing in a trash can, an event that was latter used by Vince as justification for the infamous Montreal Screw Job.
Right before ECW went bankrupt, the ECW Television Championship was lost by then champion Rhyno. He claims it was stolen from his locker room.
In keyfabe, Yokozuna once destroyed the WWE World Championship with a sledgehammer. The broken belt was latter used as the WWE Hardcore Championship.
Hulk Hogan has gone on record stating that he never returned the WCW World Championship to WCW follwing the Bash at the Beach 2000 incident.

The champions do indeed keep the belt. They keep it in their gym bags I think and bring it to important places so when they take pictures, they can hold up the belt. This was the case when David Arquette won the WCW Championship he went on set for his movie "Ready to Rumble" he took pictures with the belt.
Also, when Alundra Blayze went to WCW she took the WWF Women's Championship belt and threw it in the trash on air live.
And finally, Rhino still has his ECW Heavyweight Title in his possession at home. He admitted in a recent interview that the stunt he pulled on TNA when he "burned" the ECW Cahmpionship was a hoax and he only burned a replica.*
And I think that if a wrestler loses the belt the company probably has a few replicas and the wrestler who lost it, has to pay for a replacement.

The company owns the belts, but most of the champions take it with them to do promotional events. I doubt any wrestler who still works for the company would want to lose their paycheck by destroying the belt.

No they have to give the title back when they lose it. They do get a replica of the exact belt they won. Just for an ego boost. There was one incident with Alundra Blayze then WWE Women's Champion signed with WCW and trashed the WWE women's title on live television.

There is usually a $25,000.00 deposit put down on the belts so that the wrestler can carry it with him. There are incidents where wrestlers have destroyed belts or trashed them so to speak. Usually its always kayfabe.

They keep it. They travel with it and keep it in their hotel rooms. When the writers decide to have new champs they bring them in and have their match then the titles are passed on.

a midget wresler did just that back in 1940s..tried to use belt as a ladder to climb on to put christmas lights on his house..belt broke and after that they stopped allowing champs to handel the belts. the belts get shipped ahead to the next even b/c the wrestlers are too stupid too remember to bring them or they will loose them
