Clean the battery posts and the cables. Be sure that the ground cable is connected tightly to ground.
Just a little bit of oxidation between the cables and the posts can cause problems. If there are too many broken strands on the ground cable then cut it and connect a new battery post connector.
90% of our tractor problems have been the above.

Still sounds like the battery--make sure you have wire brushed the poles of the battery and the connections are good and tight. Check starter cables- corroded? It is possible to get a bad battery once in awhile--did you put a charger on the battery to see if that helps. The clicking makes me think it is the battery.

if it smokes once you're trying to commence it, then that is likely a foul electric powered connection, i'd examine each and each of the battery cables and it would properly be the solenoid. an straight forward thanks to ascertain the position the priority is to degree the voltage. connect a volt meeter to the battery first, then attempt to commence it. examine how a lot the voltage is going down, if it continues to be a similar and that is intense adequate, then it isn't a foul battery. then examine the position the solenoid connects, once you hit upon a gap that has no or little voltage the position this is going to then you definately have got here around the priority. once you do not have any volt meeter, then use a tail mild or something to work out if there is skill someplace, remember to ascertain the floor cable besides. a foul connection may also reason the battery to no longer can charge, so there's a fantastic danger that the battery needs replaced besides as what brought with reference to the priority contained in the first position, in case you replace the battery and it extremely works, do no longer provide up searching for the priority.

Good battery and power to the starter, then take the starter to an auto parts store and have them check the solenoid.

I think Barkley is on the money, but if that doesn't fix it, be prepared to replace that starter. At that age, it's lived a good life.
