So many important issues are decided by the few that can afford to take time away from work to vote and I have things to do for my family before work and after work. Most people have time on the weekend to do other things and voter turn out would, I am sure, be much better.

I totally agree with you. Either stick in on saturday, or make federal elections national holidays. The original logic for putting elections on a weekday might have been to avoid putting elections on a day of rest for a major religious group (Sat for Jews, Sun for Christians) but that's just a guess.

First off, maybe the voter officials don't want to work on the weekend. Secondly, in many places they close all the bars on voting day, can you imagine shutting the bars on a Saturday? Third, no way you can do it on Sundays that would be religious discrimination, hey same thing for Saturday (Orthodox Jews would probably not be able to vote on Saturday). So either you make the time before or after work, you vote absentee.

Polls open at normally 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. No excuse for NOT making the voting booth. If the polls were open on SATURDAY you people would make another excuse (soccer, basketball, shopping, etc etc etc). I have voted since I was 21 in 1967(back then that was the voting age) (including when I was stationed overseas) and only time I missed was in 2004....my plane was delayed and missed a connection and I didn't get back into town until 8 p.m when I should have been here early in the afternoon.
If you don't vote, it's because YOU DIDN'T WANT TO or DIDN'T TRY.

Employers are legally obligated to give you time to vote. Also, workdays that extend the entire time the polls are open are rare. People are often away on the weekend, home during the week. There are many reasons.

I do think Election Day would be a better federal holiday than some we have.

Used to be a day to celebrate voting with fellow citizens by doing it when you're supposed to be working. Now people are desperate to support themselves and can't afford to take time off-- plays into the hands of dastardly policians every time when people don't show up.

with the polls open for 12 hrs or more, i bet you can find 5 minutes to do it since you had nough time to turn your computer on and ask this question. besides, there s absentee ballots if you work 24 hrs a day

I'm guessing because most government offices aren't open on the weekend.

Your employer is required by law to let you take time off work to vote.

Y'know, that's a good freaking question!!!

My dad, the smarty-pants says they did it so that its sober people that are voting... Go ahead and get drunk, enjoy the weekend, we'll even give you Monday to enjoy your hangover.... and you can have a clear head to vote on Tuesday...

It was set up that way so the poverty level people would risk being fired from work for sneaking out early to vote. So in other words its to keep the parasites as the democratic party calls them, from not voting.

Poor people cant afford to take time off to vote so a vast majority don't bother so richer people get to decide who wins.
