Yes you can. First of all you put in the win xp pro cd... and do the clean install. When you get to the Parition screen then you have to dlt all the partitions you see. After you dlt them all then you should see "Unpartitioned space" you select that. give your parition a name and give it about half the hard drive space. So lets say you got a 300 gig HD. Give one of the partitions 150 gig. Afteryou finish that. Go to create another partion and use up the rest of the free space. Now you select one partition you wnat xp pro to be installed on. and then wait for copying installation etc. After you successfully installed the first copy. Then you restart the comp and lve the win xp disk in there unless if you got the full version of vista then you put that in. Go to the installation screen again and wait for the partition screen to show. Select the opposite one you selected when you installed yoru other xp pro.
Make sure it's the opposite partition that you installed xp pro on or else yoru basically doing the same thing over wasting time. After you finish installing the second xp pro then you take out the xp pro cd and put in the vista cd "upgrade edition" and then follow the steps on teh screen. after you finish installing and you restart your computer you should see a boot screen asking you to select the o/s you want to boot up with it'll say pervious version of windows which is xp. and it'll say windows vista so then you basically select which operating system you want to use. and then yah. If you do this right then I guareentee you success since II've done this a couple times already. Here's the link if you wnat sets for installing windows. http://www.windowsxpprofessional.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdoldhdd/indexfullpage.htm

You can scratch the vista and install only the xp pro. Or, you can add a partition to your hard drive and install xp in the 2nd partition. Norton's Partitionmagic software can be used to do that. Then you have both vista and xp.
Note that the original xp was probably licensed for your previous machine.
Good luck. It's a good idea.

It will be difficult to transfer your old XP license onto your new laptop - Microsoft are Nazis and will not give you an activation code which allows you to activate it again.
Best idea if you like XP Pro - buy a budget-priced cracked version of XP Pro from Warezstore ($25)

??? If it comes w/Vista, it will have it (or you could burn it) on CD. & would not Dell cut back a deal for a XP/Vista improve mixture? (so which you get the two.) EDIT: "i do no longer think of it comes with a CD. The OS is pre-put in. isn't that common?" Yeah, and it sucks. yet meaning (until it replaced into erased) abode windows archive records are on your HDD and may be burned to a CD. until they have stopped doing that interior the final couple of years. And in spite of else, you could desire to have the means to get a CD from Dell for a minimum cost given which you have already have been given a COA (Serial # Tag) on the computing gadget itself. "If I actually have a intense crash, if I actually have a CD i could no longer could desire to pay a tech to repair it?" Yeah, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it could nonetheless possibly mean dropping something extra (records, spreadsheets, etc) on the HDD (puzzling stress). As an aside, while you're gazing XP, make advantageous the style you have have been given has XP drivers accessible in the different case it is going to likely be a intense soreness.

Have you thought of Vista Upgrade? It should just transfer all of your XP settings.
Don't rush into Vista. There are a hundred problems Microsoft doesn't know about yet. Wait six months to a year.

You can reload it, unfortunately, you wont be able to activate it without being thought of a pirate, even tho you paid for a windows license on the new computer. Best is to get kubuntu for free at www.kubuntu.org
