Cannavaro. World cup. Player of the year. Hard credentials to argue with.

This is hard to answer. Different guys mean different things to different teams. Rio Ferdinand would be as bad at Chelsea as Terry would be at Liverpool.
I think at their clubs, all the best defenders from the top teams are good, but I feel that Jamie C. (LFC) and Rio F (MANUTD) would tie for the best defenders in the EPL. In the world, I AM THE BEST DEFENDER! I play for my school.

Nemanja Vidic. Scores goals. Always a threat at set pieces. His partnership with Rio Ferdinand is the best at the moment.

I must agree with some of the other answers, Rio Ferdinand is like that rhyme " when he`s good, he`s very very good, but when he`s bad, he`s terrible ". but of the two I think he just pips Nemanja Vidic (only just), Yes I know he scores Goals, BUT, I think he is prone to make more mistakes than Rio.

Dani Alves of Sevilla
He is playing superbly this season.
He's a right back but can score goals including free kicks.
