a complex sentence contains a sentence and one or more clauses. eg, i knew the lady that sold waterchestnuts ("i knew the lady" is the simple sentence. it is independant by itself. "that sold waterchestnuts" is a clause). another eg, the tailor who looks like my uncle has closed his shop for renovation. ("the tailor has closed his shop for renovation" is the sentence. "who looks like my uncle" is the clause).
a compound sentence is the joining of two sentences with a comma and a coordinating conjunction. eg, i left for school early, but i still reached class late ("i left for school early" and "i still reached class late" are the sentences. "but" is the coordinating conjunction that connects both sentences. another eg, she baked a cake last night, for she had an appointment in the morning ("she baked a cake last night" and "she had an appointment in the morning" are the sentences. "for" is the coordinating conjunction). list of coordinating conjunctions--and, but, or, nor, for, yet...
hope i explained clearly enough and you understand :D
