Everything that has an engine pollutes the atmosphere unfortunately. As much as we want to decrease pollution, we have to be practical, people need and want to fly. Without the aeroplane people would not be able to take holidays abroad. Travelling by ship takes too long, people do not have long enough holidays to do that. All that we can do is hope that within the next decade or so, someone will come up with a new type of fuel that is a non-pollute-ant.

There's far too much hype concerning pollution caused by aeroplanes. At worst the government's proposed flight tax will probably only add about £3 to the cost of a ticket. They're not really interested in reducing emissions, they're just looking for another 'tax'.

Take the case of the London car charge or tax. If we wanted to reduce pollution in London the level of tax per day on any vehicle entering the city should be in the region of £100 per day. But no, it's not a charge, it's a tax - more wonga for Ken to squander on ever more outrageous white elephants.

Air transportation enables a large amount of wealth creation. The 1st world is about wealth creation. The 3rd world would love to be about it also, but they will not install the infrastructure in their country to enable them. If individuals from the 1st world attempt to install infrastructure the 3rd world leaders think they are helping the locals by nationalizing it. The 1st worlders have learned let the 3rd worlders stay 3rd worlders.

Its the same old story, they don't want you to stop using your cars as they can tax you for the privilege and now the government has just increased the tax on flights, and who pays for that ? you and me, just another back door tax. They have no plans of stopping us using these forms of transport as the benefits to the government is far too profitable.
