1) Steve Sullivan - Nashville Predators ....... He is undersized and takes a lot of abuse but there may be no finer two way player in the league right now.

2) Chris Drury- Buffalo Sabres...........Same as above, more well known to the hockey population. Having a career year playing with whoever is healthy enoght to skate. Oh yeah, as a kid pitched in and won the Little League World Series(For Conn.) Can you say clutch?

3) Alexandre Frolov - Los Angeles Kings..............Great player on a bad team . Crosby and Stall get all the headlines but this guy could be even better if he had someone to pass him the puck.

4) Chris Mason - Nashville Predators.................Great back-up goaltender that was called into action earlier this season. Learned from the best, as he sat behind Marty Brodeur for a couple of years in NJ.

5) Chris Higgins - Montreal Canadiens...............3 shorthanded goals in his first 12 games and averaging a point a game before going down with a bad leg injury. He may be one to watch next year.

Here are my top 5:

Daymond Langkow - looking at a 30 goal season, a point per game average, a top 20 plus minus and 20 min/game playing time.

Rick Dipietro - all jokes about the contract aside, if he plays like this through the bulk of the contract, Garth Snow will look like a genius.

Marc Savard - top 10 in scoring and you never seem to hear anything about him.

Robyn Regehr - will never win a Norris trophy because he doesn't put up the points that other defencemen do, but he is probably one of the top 3 defensive-defencemen in the league.

Paul Stastny - 44th overall pick and now 2nd in rookie scoring, he will become the sleeper hit and will be in the running for rookie of the year.

1. Derek Armstrong, how in the world he has the +/- he has with this team and their Goaltending issues I don't know.

2. Chris Mason, he'd be a starter for more than a few NHL teams

3. Marc Savard, among the point leaders, nobody knows who he is

4. Jay Pandolfo, shuts down the top scorers nightly, nobody knows

5. Jason Blake, a big reason why the Islanders are where they are

and now a HOCKEY 101 LESSON

Definition of Underrated: a player who is not appreciated and noticed for his skills and what he contributes on a nightly basis.

Sean Avery is NOT underrated.
Try OVERRATED. VERY.

k, its not five, but...

paul stastny, with all the attention paid to evgeni malkin, people forget about this rookie, check out his stats this year, and his recent 13 game point scoring streak doesnt hurt.

alex tanguay, he was dealt to calgary to provide jerome iginla with a player to boost his point totals for. after getting off to a slow start, he now is tops on the team in assists, and iggy is having a quiet but good season too

martin broduer. and youre thinking, what? he's not underrated at all, hes the best goalie in the league. hes here because all the talk for the mvp is going to go to crosby, but broduer is having an amazing season

chris drury, up until the sabres/senators game a couple weeks ago, most people in the nhl, including most of the bandwagoners who are now rooting for the sabres, wouldnt know about this guy, but he and daniel briere are the sole reasons (not ryan miller) that buffalo is considered a contender this year.

simon gagne, great player on a terrible team, put some decent players on his wing, and he'd be the leading goal scorer in the league.

oh, hey, whaddya know, it was five

Mike Fisher, Ott - One of the most fluent skaters i have ever seen, with incredibly underrated speed (14.2 seconds in the ottawa team competition, which is right around where the all star players got. ps- ovechkin got 15.3) He's got a solid shot, solid passing ability, and hes an above average hitter. A complete player.

Doug Weight, Stl - Another incedibly fluent skater, outstanding passing/playmaking ability. Underrated because of his staggered point totals, but he always competes and always plays well (it just doesnt always translate into points)

Lubomir Visnovsky - one of the most skilled Defensemen, and oustanding skating ability.

Marc Savard, Bos - This guy is another great playmaker who deserved an all star spot this year.

Simon Gagne, Phi - Incredible speed and skating ability, great shot but never seems to play with anyone that complements his ability. (had 47 goals last year in only 72 games -not bad for playing with Mike Knuble)

Players to watch for - Erik Christensen, PIT (insane wrist shot), Paul Stastny, COL (great rookie), Martin Havlat (incredible skill but never seems to stay healthy enough to be considered)

Marc Savard-BOS - I mean 3rd in assists and didn't make the allstar game? cmon

Matt Lombardi-He's underrated even my his own team. With his speed, he should be playing on someone's top line. His ability to enter the zone on the PP is invaluable

Evgeni Malkin - in the shadow of crosby has 69 points as a rookie.

Alexander Semin - in Ovechkin's shadow has 33 goals on the year (T9th) in just his second year in the NHL. Look who he is tied with, Zetterberg, Frolov, Kovalchuck and Drury. All proven NHL scorers (Frolov being the least of these)

For the last i'll go with a goalie:
Nick Backstrom. Probably one of the best backups in the league. 2.2GAA, .924SV% (3rd in both). Could be a starting goalie for a team like L.A. or Tampa Bay.

even as i'm now unlikely to argue with those who attempt this for a residing, i could placed Hemsky, who's underrated as a playmaker, above Frolov, Kariya, and Ribiero, who are not even the perfect on there communities and that i'm no longer particular belong contained in the genuine 50. yet as you stated, there's a small distinction in factors. i must actually be out of the loop. even as did Scott Niedermayer re-signal with New Jersey? he's a loose Agent to boot come July 1st, isn't he? the position is Mark Striet? Is he the optimal Islanders participant? in case you get a threat.... thanks very a lot for posting, LITY
