"Working the room" generally is said of a person who is actively socializing in a group setting, making sure to have contact with as many individuals as possible, often with an ulterior motive.

The term is often used to describe politicians who need to generate support from the masses, or "social butterflies" who flit from person to person to achieve greater popularity. However, the term could be more literally applied to a person who would really be "working" in this manner, such as a stripper.
