Their's is a service industry, and should not get upset if the customer wishes to take time to order. I've been on the other side, where BK says "have it your way, but on our time", and waited 12 minutes for an order of chicken fries.
If you are not yet ready to order and the clerk does not offer, simply state, "I'm not yet ready to order, please let the person behind me go first while I look at the menu".

I am a cashier at Panera Bread.
It is really annoying when customers stand there and don't know what they are getting for a long time because:
1.) They have other duties like wiping tables, stocking, making coffees, cleaning and many others that have to get done before they finish.
2.) They can't do those duties because you are standing there and the customer is the first priority. We have to stay there just in case you have questions or are ready to order.
3.) You could tell the cashier that its going to take a while so you can go do whatever you need to.
4.) Many places have take home menus, or you can see the menu online before you leave. Make your decision and then go to the restaurant or get a to go menu and sit down at a table and make your decision and then you can take as long as you like.
I hope this helps!

You can let other people go ahead of you until you decide what you want. You can ask for a take out menu and keep it in your car. When you drive up, look at the menu, and then order.
Also, it's cool that you're trying to be considerate, so many people are rude and just don't care.. good luck..

Stand to the side and do not get into line until you know what you want.
If you stand in line it will make you nervous about the people behind you and the time you have before you are forced to order.
When you are not in line you have all the time in the world.
You should not be worried about how long it takes you to choose, I have a friend who takes a long time to figure out what he wants and sometimes when we go out a restaraunt the waiter has to come back three or four times before he knows what he wants. And I know before we get in there.
Thats why I usually just go to a Chinese buffet, that way you don't even have to order, you just take what you want.

I hope you and the cashier are not losing sleep over this.Who cares how long you decide. You have the right to take your time although sounds like you go there often and should know the whole menu by now.

Go into the restaurant with an idea of what you want. If you know you want chicken then that narrows down your choices a lot. When in doubt ask the cashier what's popular.

I am really slow at deciding too. I will stand back from the line while I look at the menu. Once I decide, I get in line.

How about next time you plan out what you would like to eat. Another strategy is to sort of take turns eating a certain type of meal. For example, if you eat a cheeseburger on Monday eat a chicken sandwich on Tuesday.

Look up the menu online or call them to see what they carry if you have questions. Or you can ask a friend, your family or coworker if they carry something you like or might want to try.

Try to figure it out before you go or on your way there, and if you still take a while it's ok, just because it is fast food doesn't mean you have to be fast.
