My mechanic recommended this service and I don't know if it is likely to extend the life of the transmission or not.

With that many miles, if you change the trans filter and fluid, it may not pull out of its tracks. If the transmission is whining or slipping, new fluid will cause it to go completely out in short order.

As a general rule of thumb you should change the fluid and filter at 75,000 mile intervals. This does depend on each manufacturers' recommendations, but it works well for most. I would definitely get it changed. It doesn't cost that much. However, there may be some damage done. Probably not much if you don't have any driveability problems. But the parts of the transmission that wear out become particulate matter in the fluid which propagates wear at a higher rate. So, it is really better late than never - have it dumped.

when was it done last? At how many miles? If it was done as per dealer recomendation, then yes, you should keep up with the scheduled maintanence. But if it was never done before, then you may wind up with more problems. The old fluid probably left a lot of varnish on the seals, if you flush it now, you could wind up with a lot of leaks.

good luck......

It's a little overdue but it is always good to keep a maintenance schedule. Annotate when you do your tune ups and oil changes. Also find out when it is recommended to do these scheduled maintenance in accordance with your vehicle specifications/manufacturer.

with that many miles, from what i understand you should not do a flush. a flush is only recommended under 70k and then routinely.

change it only if its dirty, or your transmission pan is leaking, sometimes changing it does more harm than good.
