Is tennis a good, vigourous sport? I am trying to lose weight and I don't want to play with rules, more with a friend just for fun. I've never tried tennis, and lately i've been thinking about it. I just want to know if tennis is a vigourous workout.

I was a tennis instructor so I can help you out. Tennis can be one of the most physically demanding sports. The problem is it is only physically demanding if you are really good. It takes hours and hours (and lessons) to get to that point. You will work up a sweat, but you won't burn a lot of energy unless you are good. Soccer is a fantastic sport to loose weight, but nothing beats running long distances.

1.Hit it at will drill: Set up a bunch of hula hoops or other objects on a secluded tennis court grab a bag of balls and see how you do at hitting the balls into a specific ring. The benefits of being able to hit the ball where ever you choose are oblivious. Cheaper solution to drill 1. Use cans instead of hula hoops. Above is just one example of a drill you might try, everyone would benefit from different drills differently, when designing drills you have to know and or ask yourselves the following things. 1. What are my limitations? 2. What are my weaknesses? 3. What are my strengths? 4. How will this drill improve these? 5. What exactly do you do in tennis? (After you determine this you can design a drill that imitates these things.)

Tennis can be extremely vigorous, depending on how you play.
There are various games that involve much more running then normal tennis, like "flatline" in which the point of the game is to not let the ball stop bouncing on your side. You get a point whenever the ball begins to roll on your opponents side.

You can also play tennis with a beach ball, which results in plenty of running.

No. Although pro tennis players expend a ton of energy in their matches, few recreational players have the ability to play at a level and generate the kind of physical exertion that the pros exhibit.

You have to a really good player to rally like the pros and be in great physical shape to run down all the shots.

Try old fashioned jogging.

It is a pretty vigorous sport. You run a lot. You back peddle, rush up to the net and everything.
