I have a 1994 Mitsubishi Diamante, Im planning to travel with it about 300 miles. I have an oil leak from my gasket, and i have to add about quarter oil tank every week... Do you think its safe to drive with it 300 miles non stop, or will it damage my vehicle, or worst stop in the middle of the trip.

I would think that you will be ok to take the trip. I would definitely take some time prior to the trip to do some preventative maintenance.

I would check the oil, make sure that you have the oil at the upper level before you leave. I would also take oil with me in the trunk.

I would check all the other fluids, washer, brake, transmission (must be checked while the car is running) and check all your lights, etc.

While driving I would pay close attention to temperature and oil pressure( if you have a gauge), and stop about every 100 or so miles. Remember that when you are driving that when you check the oil, that the dipstick will read less than is actually in the engine. DO NOT OVERFILL THE OIL! Some of the oil will stay in the top part of the engine block and if you put too much oil in, you can cause pressures that will completely blow out gaskets in the engine.

To be on the safe side, I would also call AAA and take out a Road-side assistance plan for around $35. It is well worth the money, especially if you get out on the road and have problems.

Hope this helps, Have a Good Trip!

First, any car, even fresh and new from the dealer can break down at any time. Next, if the only real problem is an oil leak, why not simply fix it before you go? Gaskets are not expensive, and not terribly difficult to replace in many cases. You do not specify which gasket so I am assuming valve cover or crankcase, but timing cover is another candidate and is somewhat more time and effort to replace,or even oil filter housing. Failing that, take a couple of quarts of oil with you. Watch the gage if you have one, and the temperature gage which will also rise slightly when oil pressure drops. Stop every few miles and check the oil. I'd suggest every 50 miles, but then that is based on your description of the leak and probably an excess of caution.

Which gasket is leaking? Valve cover? If so, replace it, it is a simple inexpensive repair. Then you will not have a need to worry with your trip. take the car to a garage, most oil leak checks are free and you will know what to expect as far as a repair goes.
good luck.......

you should be ok if everything else on the vehicle is in proper working order. just bring an extra couple quarts of oil with you.

As long as you keep the oil level above the "add" mark you should be fine.
