Listen to the older guys on varsity and bust your @$$ from now until summer practice starts. Noe you're at the age where you can start hitting the weights. You also want to be sure to do plenty of sprints and calisthetics. Try to get in touch with the defensive back coach at the high school you'll be attending and see if he can give you any drills, films, books, or other recommendations about the position. Safety is my favorite position, along with the one I believe is most important on defense. Good luck.

Safety huh... pretty fun. I play safety myself, and here i have one of the best coaches he played safety for army in college. Training for a safety position is very hard. First of all you have to be fast, mean, and can hit and catch. Some drills are backpeddling, and then having someone throw you the ball. You will need to build up all your around body strength to be better, expecially your legs. You will need to know how to get low, and hit low. There is alot to do. For hitting reasons, buy a punching bag tie it to your weight system if you have one, and put it and then u can push it and when it is coming back hit it, if you do this you will be very tough. Good luck

Don't be afraid to hit somebody! You can't hesitate at safety because usually you're the last man to beat. The key to hitting/tackling is to run THROUGH the offensive player, not TO him.
And you're field vision needs to be excellent. Being able to know where the receivers are as you're watching the QB's eyes are key.

You have to use your speed and your strength. Be able to lay down a hard hit, but also have the speed to cover receivers. Play smart, and never give up on the play.
